The media and the politicians are ignoring you. If you're a Christian, they are telling you that you are not worthy of entering the public discourse. You are not news worthy, they say. Christians just aren't interesting. Yawn.
Who's fault is that?
If the Catholic Church is boring at best, who wants to listen?
Remember the Peanuts cartoon. Charlie Brown and his friends only hear "Wah wah woh wah wah," from their teacher. In a Western context, we Christians are not the lame teacher. We're putting out a lot of documents and statements, but to the world it's "Wah wah woh wah wah."
We can cross our arms and say, "Well it's that darn liberal media. I just watch Fox News." But let me tell you, that right there is one of the reasons they aren't listening.
The reason Charlie Brown heard "Wah wah woh wah wah," is because he could care less about what the teacher was saying. He perceived it had nothing to do with his life.
I fear people today assume that Jesus Christ has nothing to do with their lives. They've already heard that "legend" and it doesn't inspire them.
This is not a new problem. It's happened before. Hearts grow cold. People lose the faith. But the historical solution always involved a saint who lived in that context and found a way to present the Gospel in a fresh and new light.
All the game changers in Church history were led by holy men and women who presented the Faith in a new light. This often shocked the culture around them. Consider St Anthony of Egypt, Saint Benedict, and Saint Francis as examples. Even little Saint Therese showed us something even more compelling about becoming a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ. What they did and said seemed at the time so new and revolutionary. Yet, they were living the Gospel, something old but ever new.
So here's the challenge. Get out of the Fox News loop: "The media is so evil." Say something significant. Say something that interrupts the "Wah wah woh wah wah."
Speak light and "be salty."
