TWELVE ecotourism sites in Eastern Visayas region took center stage at the ecotourism exhibit organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) recently.
The Biri-Larosa Protected Landscape and Seascape in Northern Samar was one of the featured destinations, said Purificacion Daloos, regional information officer of DENR.
The protected landscape and seascape has been one of the awesome destinations in the region with its unique and amazing rock formations aptly named the Biri Islands Rock Formations.
It is also one of the 25 destinations vying for the Top 10 Philippine Gems organized by the Isla Lipana and Company, together with the Philippine Tourism Promotions Board of the Department of Tourism and global communications firm Fleishman Hillard.
The other sites featured were Guiuan-Calicoan Surf Camp in Eastern Samar, and the San Pablo and San Pedro Islands in Hinunangan, Southern Leyte.
Also included were Lake Danao in Ormoc City, Kalanggaman in Palompon, Hindang Cave in Hindang, and Cuatro Islas in Hindang and Inopacan Protected Landscape and Seascape, all in Leyte province.
In Samar province, the eco-tourism sites that were featured in the exhibit were the Sohoton Natural Bridge/Natural Park in Basey Samar; Calbiga Caves/Langon-Gobingob Cave and the Lulugayan Falls in Calbiga; and the Torpedo Boat Ride in Paranas.
Corazon Makabenta, division chief of DENR's Coastal Marine Management Division, said that in terms of physical attraction, the sites are ecotourism ready, but there are conditions that have to be met, such as installation of facilities and services.
The exhibit had the theme "Sustaining local Socio-Economic growth through Community based Ecotourism." It aimed to encourage cooperation among non-government organizations, local government units and industry in developing ecotourism practices that are “environmentally, economically and socially beneficial, while minimizing their negative impacts.”
Ecotourism, as defined in DENR Administrative Order 2013-19, refers to a form of tourism within a natural and cultural heritage area where there is community participation, protection and management of natural resources.(Leyte Samar Daily Express)
