Pinoy math wizards bag medals, awards in Romania


Young Filipino students won 16 medals and awards in the 17th Clock Tower School International Mathematics Contest, held from March 20 to 23 in Romania.

Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG), told Manila Bulletin that the Philippines won 3 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medals and an honorable mention in the individual contest, and 3 second places, 2 third places and 3 honorable mentions in the Blitz round.
Winning gold medals for the country are Dion Stephan Ong, Grade 5, of Ateneo de Manila University Grade School; William Joshua King, Grade 5, of Bethany Christian School and Jinger Chong, Grade 6, of St. Jude Catholic School.
Silver medalists are Gen Mark Tanno, Grade 8, of Southville International School and Colleges; Eion Nikolai Chua, Grade 5, of MGC New Life Christian Academy; and Stefan Marcus Ong, Grade 5, of St. Jude Catholic School.
Tiffany Mae Ong of Immaculate Conception Academy won a bronze medal while Alyana Zoie Chua of MGC New Life Christian Academy was awarded honorable mention.
In the Blitz round, where contestants were given limited time to solve the problems, Tanno, Dion Stephan Ong and Tiffany Mae Ong won second place while Stefan Marcus Ong and Chong won third place.
Honorable mentions went to King and siblings Alyana Zoie and Eion Nikolai Chua.
The Philippine team leader is Justin Josef Villano.
A total of 561 students from all over Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, Serbia, Indonesia and the Philippines joined the competition organized by Romania’s Ministry of National Education,  Mathematical Society of Romania, Valcea County School Inspectorate and Valcea Teacher Training.
