Guiuan’s bright tourism prospects cited

Guiuan, Eastern Samar – Mayor Christopher Gonzales is pushing awareness of Guian’s “bright” prospects, with areas in this Eastern Visayas coastal town now being eyed for tourism development.
Gonzales said he is optimistic about Guiuan’s tourism prospects, particularly after business tycoon Lucio Tan, along with other potential investors visited the town, indicating interest to develop some areas in the town as tourist destinations.
The Guiuan mayor said Tan, among others have already, in fact, purchased land in Calicoan island which will be developed as tourism and real estate development projects.
He said the business tycoon has conducted a traffic count and is now waiting for the results of a survey he has commissioned to determine the number of prospective local and foreign tourists who could be drawn to Guiuan.
Gonzales also pointed to such infrastructure as the town’s new airport which could ensure the influx of tourists.
Both local and foreign visitors have, of late, been seen coming to Guiuan in increasing numbers, drawn by the town’s reputation as a world-class surfing destination,
Guiuan’s fine and white sand beaches are also a certified visitor draw. Other features include Sulangan island which is home to the miraculous images of  Saints Anthony de Padua and Anthony Abad. The island could also be the spot where the first Catholic mass was said in the country, when Portuguese explorer landed there en route to Limasawa Island.
Guiuan, which faces the Pacific Ocean, is also the fishing capital of Eastern Visayas.
