SRP desalination plant opens

-AA+A
CEBU-based water technology system provider Pilipinas Water Resources Inc. (PWRI) unveiled last Saturday what they said was Cebu’s largest desalination plant at the South Road Properties (SRP).
PWRI president William Maceren said the already spent P750 million for the facility, whose water supply will be enough for locators for the next five years.
The plant will initially supply 22,000 cubic meters (cu.m) per day of water to SRP locators but is expandable up to 50,000 cu.m. per day. Maceren said the plant has oversized lines capable of supplying more water. Its current capacity is 25,000 cu.m per day.
Its waste water tank, on the other hand, has a total capacity of 12,000 cu.m per day.

Joint venture
The SRP desalination plant is a joint venture between PWRI and the Cebu City Government.
In 2010, the Cebu City Government signed a 30-year contract with PWRI for the water supply in the SRP, which City Hall reclaimed using a loan from Japan. Under the agreement, the PWRI will use existing city-owned desalination and waste water treatment plants in the SRP.
Maceren said the contract is renewable for another 30 years.
The desalination plant will be operated by PWRI sister company Mactan Rock Industries Inc. Mactan Rock is also the contractor of the plant.
Mactan Rock director Antonio Camelo Tompar said the plant uses seawater desalination, a process that converts seawater into potable water.
The company is selling water at P47 per cu.m to SRP locators, which they said is cheaper than MCWD’s commercial rate of P57 per cu.m.
Pricing agreement
“The pricing was in agreement with the Cebu City government,” said Tompar.
Last year, Tompar announced P2.5 billion in investments in the next five years to ensure sustainability of the water management project at the SRP.
A stable water supply is among the demands of SRP locators like SM and Filinvest.
Maceren dismissed reports Cebu does not have enough water supply saying that they can always provide potable water when the need arises.
But despite the available technology, Maceren stressed that commercial establishments and the public should observe water conservation and not merely depend on desalination plants.
Meanwhile, both firms have also extended support to the earthquake victims in Bohol, through their water facilities in the towns of Panglao and Corella.
